Way down south, there is a story of a man called Lee, and his wife. She was soft and wild, loving and kind as good a woman as any you'd find. but now I don't know where she's gone. Blackwood River cold as stone, cold as stone. Flowing waters, take me home. In the middle of the night, in the winter time when the moon was high, the devil inside his mind (the river was wide) He led her to the bank and then he started whistling. Back home the 303 was missing. Now I don't know where she's gone. Blackwood River cold as stone, cold as stone. Flowing waters, take me home. Now if you walk down by the river at night, sometimes you'll hear the faraway cry singing 'I don't lie, the river don't lie, the river don't lie, the river don't lie' 'I don't lie, the river don't lie, the river don't lie, the river don't lie' Now I don't know where she's gone. Blackwood River cold as stone, cold as stone. Flowing waters, take me home. cold as stone, cold as stone. Flowing waters, take me home.

He's flying north on a plane Up there the riches fall like rain He's working day and night So don't give the man a hard time Says that he loves you Probably quit that job real soon and throw in the cigarettes too as soon as the compo cheque comes through Someone's playing around and that's no way to be found He's making up for lost time To make love work you gotta leave some love behind Says that he needs you but it's four weeks on and it's one week off But you'll find something to do With the house and the kids... and the dog Four weeks on, one week off Four weeks on, one week off Four weeks on, one week off Four weeks on, one week off Says that he loves you Probably quit that job real soon and throw in the cigarettes too as soon as the compo cheque comes through Says that he needs you but it's four weeks on and it's one week off But you'll find something to do With the house and the kids... and the dog

Big red sky, with the sun creeping through. Long wire line, get on the end of that post and drive it down. When the day is over we sit around Brown bread and rice Brown bread and rice Morning bird, up in the tree, make no sound Big turning world. Now the midday sun can burn your bones When the day is over we sit around Brown bread and rice Brown bread and rice

Corn n Beans 01:34
Eat your corn, eat your corn, eat your corn and beans now, eat your corn, eat your corn, eat your corn and beans. Turn up the soil, turn up the soil, carrots, sprouts and swedes now, baked potatoes on the foil, carrots, sprouts and swedes now. Tie the rope, tie that rope, tie that rope around now, get a bowline in that rope, tie that rope and bowline. Fetch the wood, make a fire, watch that pyre burn now, roast your soul on the coals, watch that pyre burn now. Eat your corn, eat your corn, eat your corn and beans now, eat your corn, eat your corn, eat your corn and beans now. eat your corn, eat your corn, eat your corn and beans now, eat your corn, eat your corn, eat your corn and beans.

There's no such thing, as a magic carpet ride. All the stars in the sky, ain't nothing but light. There's no such place as heaven. There's no such thing as the devil. But it feels all right when you hold me tight that's true. There's an invisible line drawing me to you. There's no such thing, as free love. This ain't a free ride, it's time to grow up. There's no big revelation. That's just imagination. But it feels all right when you hold me tight that's true. There's an invisible line drawing me to you.

Morning Star 02:57
Hey morning star, won't you shine on me, so strong and bright, hopeful and free. No earthly desire is going to tempt me, when I look at your blue beauty. Hey morning star, won't you stay until noon, it's too soon, to bid you adieu. I know you and I share the same sky, We shine so blue. Hey morning star, it was dark yesterday, shine on your light and show me the way. Though the road is long it won't lead me astray, shine until the sun is gone. Hey morning star, don't you fade and die, I'll pour you my heart and pour me a wine. All the passers by won't notice the sign, shine until the sun is gone. Morning star shine, shine, shine.

She says what she's thinking She don't give a damn She don't know who I am She's a girl worth chasing I'm gonna catch her if I can Take her by the hand Show her the flowering trees All over this wide land. I'm gonna stake my claim on you. Because the land is green and the ocean's blue. Strong headed woman Does just what she please Bring you to you knees Get your mind a wandering About them birds and bees Good luck comes in threes Right beside her all the while That's where I want to be I'm gonna stake my claim on you. Because the land is green and the ocean's blue.

I'm going down to Freo It's been way too long Gonna dangle my feet in the river and drum that High St song I'm going down to Freo I'm so tired of the people uptown Gonna wear my hat, never look back skin a fat one and pass it around I would ride all through the night I would ride all through the night to see those harbour lights. I'm going down to Freo Gonna bail my debts and run Disappear down a rabbit hole but I'll be all right mum I'm going down to Freo 'cause they're waiting for me down there Gonna spend my days drinking cappuccinos and grow my hair I would ride all through the night I would ride all through the night to see those harbour lights. I'm going down to Freo Gonna pack my bag today Nothing down there's gonna save me But I think I'm gonna stay.

I've been all down the dusty road and back to my home town. Found those bright casino lights and put my money down. Fallen in love and fallen out woke up feeling low But I've never been to Bali and I don't wanna go. I've been north and I've been south I've been out to sea. I've been over east and found the desert wind calling me I walked into the wasteland carved my name into a tree I ain't been to the USA but I seen it on TV Faraway places some are in my mind All around the world somebody's leaving someone else behind Falling in love and falling out ain't nothing new I swear I've never been to Bali... I've never been to Bali... So don't shoot me down babe, I'm flying to heaven now flying to heaven now, don't shoot me down.

I want a dog that drop no fur Stay inside all night with her I want the breeze without the cold I want to be green in a four by four I want the rose without the thorn Understand this world I'm on Sit around and waste no time I want a lover that don't change her mind Want to feel the rush without the fright Dive into the starry night I want to dream and not wake up Don't want to try but I won't give up I want the pay but not the job Fortnight welfare don't you stop Want to speak my mind and not offend Walk a straight line and start again I love the start but I don't stay I miss the end of every play I want the truth without the pain Give me the summer with the winter rain Give me the summer with the winter rain I want to win without the race All my life been second place I'll have the drink without the meal I want a city with a country feel I want a city with a country feel I want a city with a country feel

Small Town 04:19
She's so young and she's so pretty Her eyes light up like Tokyo City There's beauty in her face Now they call her to the stage But her mind is on the road She's heading for the west coast Doesn't matter if she's wrong There's someone singing her song She'll turn the lights down low She don't want to be alone What's written in her eyes? Don't believe her lies She's a small town beauty queen Falling in somebody's arms again Every beauty fades away She's a small town beauty queen Falling in somebody's arms again Every beauty fades away Every beauty fades away Every beauty fades away

A livin' man A livin' man I want to be, a livin' man In all the world He moves around He walks around He turns around I see each tree I read each vein I hear each bird upon each leaf The buzzing flies The splashing fish They muse around this living man A livin' man A livin' man I want to be, a livin' man

Brown Bread and Rice
Stoney Joe (Head Records) ★★★★1/2

HAVING a big red chook on the cover isn't what makes this a great record. Having not one but two guys playing ocarina is good too, but the Morricone whistling on A Man - Part II cements it - this is swinging western music at its best. Western Australia, that is. Yes, they wear big cowboys hats, and they mastered this, their debut LP, in Nashville, but the guys in Stoney Joe make music that celebrates the open spaces and places of their WA home - such as in Goin' Down To Freo, the subtle Four Weeks On and I Want A City. Main vocalist and finger-picking guitarist (he also plays the ocarina) Roly Skender sings in a whisky-warm voice that perfectly suits the easy-rolling, beautifully melodic material, full of warmth and humour and great riffs. Joe Scholz also sings, and adds slide guitar, ukulele, harmonica and percussion. And ocarina. And Roland synthesiser (so cool). Chris Horan plays mandolin and sings, and Rolf Liedel carries it all on big bass. There are 14 tracks and every one is a treat.
